About

An idea is born

The simple idea behind Atoms to Mountains is that small actions add up to big, mighty changes

The motivation for this project comes from some troubling observations. About 258 million children and youth are out of school according to UIS data for 2018. Worldwide 132 million girls are out of school according to UNICEF. A less educated world is worse off on equality, poverty, climate change, health, pandemics, crime and so on. Change driven by governments and institutions like the UN is important - but slow - while the private sector does not have incentive to solve this issue.

As young citizens of the world, we are troubled by all this, because this is the world we will inherit.  Often it is believed that young individuals can only support a cause through activism - because we are still in school, not earning or self-sufficient yet !

Atoms to Mountains proves that we can do much more !

Power in Numbers

Let's say each of us decided to round off our lunch bill every day and put that into a fund.  Statistically, each of us would contribute 50 cents a day on average. There are 180 school days in a year. Stamford has about 1000 students. Just in Singapore alone, there are over 60 international schools. Together, just these students could create a fund of $5.4 Million in one school year ! This is enough to run 8 girls' schools in India for a year!

What could we achieve if every student in every school around the world joined forces ?

Scale through Digital Technologies

Today, digital technologies make this vision possible in ways like never before. To contribute, all a student needs is a smartphone. These "micro-payments" made by participating students, are aggregated digitally in a secure blockchain-based ledger, which ensures complete transparency and auditability. The funds can be moved periodically to a school-managed bank account.
